Getting to Darjeeling, India

So how do I get to Darjeeling, India?

  • From Delhi by train - take the train to New Jalpaiguri, also known as "NJP station". From there take a taxi (Rs. 750) or take a shared jeep (Rs. 80) directly to Darjeeling.
     
  • From Delhi by plane - fly to the Bagdogra airport near Siliguri, about US$190, and take a shared jeep or taxi directly to Darjeeling.
     
  • From Calcutta by train, there is an overnight train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), from there take a taxi (Rs. 750) or take a shared jeep (Rs. 80) directly to Darjeeling.
     
  • From Calcutta by bus, there is an overnight "Rocket Bus" every night that goes directly to Siliguri, from there take a taxi (Rs. 650) or take a shared jeep (Rs. 80) directly to Darjeeling.
     
  • From Calcutta by plane - fly to the Bagdogra airport near Siliguri, about US$95, and take a shared jeep or taxi directly to Darjeeling.
     
  • From Kathmandu by bus, take an overnight bus to Kakarbita, this is the Nepali town on the Nepal-Indian border, then a shared jeep to Siliguri and another shared jeep on to Darjeeling. You can take a taxi directly from the border to Darjeeling for about Rs. 800.
     
  • From Kathmandu by plane, fly to Bhadrapur, on the Nepal side of the border, then take an taxi to Kakarbita, this is the town on the Nepal-Indian border, then a shared jeep to Siliguri and another shared jeep on to Darjeeling.

Note: You do not need to reserve shared jeeps ahead of time, they will just leave when they are full, which usually involves about 12 people.
